It’s Fairtrade Fortnight! From the 22nd February until the 7th March Fairtrade and all its accredited members celebrate the amazing work that Fairtrade farmers around the world do every day. The theme of Fairtrade Fortnight 2021 is climate change. We are writing this blog to take the opportunity to share some of the amazing work that is happening around the world, shed some light on the Fairtrade organisation, and explain how climate change is having an impact on farmers globally.

What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.

How it helps farmers

This means that farmers are being paid a fair price for their produce so they can grow their businesses, without the fear of exploitation from buyers. By being paid a fair price for their goods, they can invest in their families and their communities, to better their environment and continue growth.

The impact of climate change

The impact of climate change for farmers is immense. Unpredictable changes in climate can result in a poor yield or no yield of crops for a season, as it renders the climate unsuitable for that crop to thrive. Without crops, farmers are unable to make an income for the year, there is no back up. With unstable climates, farmers are unable to predict the changes that need to be made during the cultivating process to be able to create a good yield.

How we can help

Every little helps when it comes to change, by making small changes to your lifestyle becoming more environmentally friendly, and encouraging those around you to do the same, we can make change. For both the farmers, and for our planet and future. And we can make a conscious effort to buy Fairtrade products, most supermarkets offer a wide range of Fairtrade items such as chocolate, flowers, wine, bananas, coffee and of course cotton!
